Hola Film Jammers! We’ve been hearing a lot of photographers talk about their favorite portrait lenses, and sure 85mm and 135mm primes are great ol’ standards. But, what about a lens like the 24-105mm f/4 zoom? Can you shoot portraits on that little fella? Could it be an alternative portrait lens? Well, let’s test it and find out in our Film Jams Canon 24-105mm lens review!

Also, we’ll be pairing the 24-105mm f/4 lens with our Canon EOS R mirrorless camera. We like using the control ring adapter so we can adjust our ISO easily. The 24-105mm is an old standard on DSLR cameras like the Canon 5D series as well as on newer mirrorless style photo machines (watch our Canon EOS R vs. 5D Mark III photography comparison). The Canon 24-105 lens known for being a great walk-around lens as it covers a nice focal range. But for portraits? Are you gonzo Film Jams!?
Canon 24-105mm Lens for Portraits?
The 24-105mm EF lens isn’t your typical go-to portrait lens. It’s not super fast, only f/4 aperture, but we think it’s worth a test to see what you can do with it. We shot most pictures at the telephoto end, somewhere between 70mm and 105mm, and tried to put some distance between our model, the camera, and the background.
Oh, there’s a model on the beach waiting? And a Piña Colada with your name on it? Let’s get to those photos!
Final Thoughts: Canon 24-105mm Lens Review
We were pretty impressed with what we were able to shoot on this little lens. The depth of field was shallow enough to separate the subject from the background. It definitely felt a lot more shallow than we were expecting, which was nice.
What do you think? Is the Canon 24-105mm lens a solid alternative to your standard portrait lenses? Let us know in the comments and we’ll see you next time!
