This year, when Will Smith was announced to play the genie in Disney’s upcoming 2019 remake of their movie Aladdin, many were excited to see how they were going to make him look in this live action remake. Would it be Will Smith, but blue? Or something a little weirder? And of course, the question on everyone’s mind was how would it hold up to the beloved Aladdin genie, played by the late great Robin Williams? Will Smith Aladdin Blue Genie…how did it happen?

There’s a blue genie afoot in our newest video of Behind-the-Scenes Disney casting

As it turns out, the new 2019 Aladdin genie, revealed in their first trailer for the movie, was pretty much Will Smith in blue CGI. The reveal left many people wondering just how Disney chose that particular route. Well, Film Jams has the inside scoop on the casting experience with Disney’s executives, and it may surprise you!

This video was directed by Film Jams creator Christian Cashmir, who also stars as one of the Disney executives along with Francine Wolf. Alan Moore acts as the genie and had to sit through hours of makeup for this unique genie look (not really, it only took about an hour!) The makeup in this Will Smith Aladdin Blue Genie video was brought to life by the talented Erin LaRoe-Warren with water-activated paint to get that hot blue look. CGI Schmee-GI! Cameras were operated by Lucas Schatzberg, who also edited, Brianna Spieldenner, and Alan when he wasn’t acting.
